Hash's Animation:Master was a patch-based 3D package designed for animating characters in front of simple backdrops, but that didn't stop me from trying to create sweeping Western landscapes with it. These images are quite basic in terms of set dressing and textures, but I still like the lighting in them. IBL and GI didn't really exist back then, so these were all lit with spot and point lights with area shadows.
The 4000 x 4000 pixel version of "American Flat" took just over 11 *days* to render, on a 700 MHz Athlon.
